Grant Writing Tips for Success

1. Quantify Your Environmental Impact

Funders want to see measurable outcomes, not just intentions. Wherever possible, include specific targets — such as the number of tonnes of emissions to be reduced, hectares of habitat to be restored, or kilowatt-hours of energy to be saved. Concrete numbers make your application stand out and demonstrate clear accountability.

2. Align with the Funder's Environmental Priorities

Each grant program has specific environmental themes — from clean energy and climate resilience to biodiversity and natural disaster preparedness. Read the guidelines carefully and tailor your language to reflect the funder's own stated priorities. Using their terminology shows you understand their mission.

3. Demonstrate Community or Sector Benefit

Environmental grants rarely fund projects in isolation — funders want to see how your project benefits people as well as the planet. Whether it's improving community resilience, supporting First Nations self-determination in clean energy, or educating the next generation of environmental stewards, make the human impact clear.

4. Show Evidence of Need

Support your application with relevant data, local research, or sector reports that demonstrate why this project is necessary now. Evidence of environmental degradation, rising energy costs, or community vulnerability to climate impacts all help build a compelling case.

5. Present a Realistic and Detailed Budget

Ensure your budget clearly reflects the true cost of delivering your project, including any co-contributions or in-kind support. Environmental projects often involve equipment, specialist expertise or site works — itemise these clearly and show you've sought realistic quotes.

6. Plan for Sustainability and Replication

Funders want to know that their investment will have lasting impact. Outline how your project's outcomes or infrastructure will continue to benefit the environment beyond the grant period, and whether your model could be adapted or scaled for use in other locations or contexts.
