Grant Writing Tips for Success

1. Demonstrate Community Impact Beyond the Scoreboard

Funders want to see that your club does more than win games. Highlight the broader community benefits your club delivers — youth development, social inclusion, mental health, volunteerism — and back this up with numbers where possible.

2. Tailor Your Application to the Funder's Priorities

A corporate sponsor like Macca's or Virgin Australia has very different motivations to a government program like Local Sporting Champions. Read each funder's guidelines carefully and frame your application around their values, language and goals — not just your club's needs.

3. Present a Realistic and Detailed Budget

Show exactly how funds will be used, including any in-kind contributions from club members or other sponsors. Demonstrating that your club is investing its own resources alongside the grant signals credibility and commitment.

4. Show Evidence of Need

Whether you're applying for equipment, event funding or travel support, clearly explain why the funding is necessary. For equipment grants, describe who misses out without support. For event grants, outline the economic and community significance of the event.

5. Highlight Partnerships and Existing Relationships

Many sporting grants favour clubs that work collaboratively — with local councils, schools, other clubs, or community organisations. Mention any existing partnerships and letters of support you can provide.

6. Plan Early for Event Funding

Programs like the Significant Sporting Events Program require applications at least six months before the event. If your club hosts or is planning to host a major event, start the grant process well in advance and build a clear case for regional or national significance.

Finding More Opportunities

Sporting clubs often qualify for far more funding than sport-specific grants alone. Our Grants Directory contains hundreds of current opportunities relevant to clubs of all sizes and sports.

When searching for grants, consider looking beyond sport-specific funding to include:

  • Community development and infrastructure grants
  • Youth programs and leadership development funding
  • Indigenous sport and reconciliation initiatives
  • Disability inclusion and accessibility programs
  • Environmental sustainability grants (e.g., solar for club facilities)
  • Corporate sponsorships and in-kind support programs
  • Regional and rural development funding
